The wind energy company with a local facility where President Barack Obama spoke in 2011 has announced the signing of an agreement that would supply turbines to a wind farm in Michigan.

The deal with Heritage Sustainable Energy marks Spanish-based Gamesa’s first sale of the new G114-2.0 MW turbine in the United States.  The contract includes a 12-year operation and maintenance service agreement.

Company officials say the new system will be produced at a lower cost and create 20 percent more energy than older models.

“Delivering a low cost of energy is one of the key drivers behind sustained growth in the wind industry,” according to Gonzalo Onzain, Vice President of Sales for Gamesa in the US.

The company produces large wind turbines at the Falls plant, which is located in the old U.S. Steel complex.

“What you do here is a glimpse of the future. It’s a future where America is less dependent on foreign oil,” Obama told plan workers in April 2011.He also touted the company’s hiring. By the end of 2012, the Falls facility had laid off dozens of works. A report from the Tribune-Democrat newspaper in the western part of Pennsylvania pegged the number of layoffs at 90 for Falls and 92 at a plant in that portion of the state.

The company did not say whether the turbines for the G114-2.0 MW turbine would be manufactured in their massive Falls facility.

The new units will start being delivered to the wind farm in Michigan next year.
