Wednesday marks a milestone for Pennsylvania’s medical marijuana program.

This week, a group of 16 of dispensaries will begin selling dry leaf form marijuana products for vaporization for the first time in the state’s history.

Next Wednesday, Beyond / Hello in the Durham Square Shopping Center on Durham Road near New Falls Road in Bristol Township will be among 12 additional dispensaries that will begin selling dry leaf marijuana.

“We’re beyond excited for the addition of dry leaf to the Commonwealth’s Medical Marijuana program,” said Blythe Huestis, President of Beyond / Hello. “Like with all our products, we will vet and carry a wide selection of strains and brands, and provide education and guidance to patients as to how dry leaf may be a good option to serve their personal wellness needs.”

The initial medical marijuana regulations allowed patients suffering from one of the qualifying conditions to be able to access marijuana processed pills, ointment, patch, and oil form products with orders from a doctor.

Medical marijuana advocates have said that the dried leaf form is more affordable than other medical marijuana products and can be more effective for certain ailments.

“It’s vital for patients to remember that the dry leaf form of medical marijuana is available for vaporization only,” said Dr. Rachel Levine, who lead the Pennsylvania Department of Health. “It is illegal to smoke the medication. Please make sure that when transporting your medication, you keep it in the original container and have your medical marijuana ID card with you.”

Beyond / Hello opened in May and is part of Franklin Group. It is the first location operated by the company and there are plans to open a location in Center City this fall, Josh Richman, senior vice president for sales and marketing for the new dispensary, said earlier this year.

In spring, Pennsylvania officials approved the sale of dry leaf medical marijuana.

State officials said more than 52,000 patients have registered to take part in the medical marijuana program. So far, more than 30,000 people have received their medical marijuana cards.
