Patient Arrested After Struggle With Hospital Staff

A Delaware County man was taken into custody after allegedly assaulting security personnel and damaging property at Jefferson Bucks Hospital earlier this month.

The 31-year-old Concord Township, Delaware County, man was preliminarily arraigned by District Judge John Galloway on charges of aggravated assault, disorderly conduct, and criminal mischief following the Jan. 2 incident.

The Falls Township Police Department was called to the hospital on North Oxford Valley Road at approximately 3:16 a.m. for reports of a disorderly patient.

Officers said the 31-year-old man had to be restrained on the floor of the emergency room waiting room by hospital staff. It reportedly required seven to eight people to hold the 31-year-old man down.

Police said the 31-year-old man had come to the hospital for drug detoxification.

While the 31-year-old man had been cleared for detox, he became agitated after learning he would not be immediately transferred to a rehabilitation facility, police said.

When the 31-year-old man refused to leave the premises, a security officer attempted to escort him from the building, police said.

It was alleged that the security officer and the 31-year-old man fell into a wall during a struggle. The fall resulted in damage to the wall and a telephone. The 31-year-old man then allegedly struck the security officer on the right side of the head, causing bruising above the forehead, police said.

The district set bail at 10 percent of $75,000, and the 31-year-old man was remanded to the Bucks County Correctional Facility.
