Brian Salt, 36, of Falls Township, was preliminarily arraigned late Thursday afternoon on charges of endangering the welfare of a child, aggravated assault on a child less than 13 years old, and simple assault. District Judge John Galloway held him on 10 percent of $500,000 bail.

Falls Township police responded to Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia on March 12 for a report of a 3-month-old girl from the township with a skull fracture, according to court papers.

The attending physician told police the injury was caused by substantial force, and the infant also had bruising on her lower right leg and blood in her eye.

The baby’s parents told police that on March 11, the mother left for work around 7:30 a.m. and left the child in Salt’s care.

Salt, the father of the child, and the baby’s mother said the baby was fussy and suffered from colic.

Salt told police when he could not console the crying infant, he took her to his in-laws, who live nearby. He said he noticed a large, unexplained bump on the back of her head.

After consulting with their pediatrician, they took the baby to the hospital, where the skull fracture was discovered, Salt relayed to police.

Neither parent could explain how the injury occurred, police said.

During a follow-up interview with police on March 20, Salt admitted he let the baby fall to the ground, causing her to strike her head, police said.

He told investigators the baby had been crying uncontrollably, and he lost control, police said.

Salt allegedly told police he knew he had injured her and then took her to his in-laws and pretended that he had just discovered the injury.

Salt is the chief of the Falls Township Fire Company, according to sources and the fire company’s records.
