Students from Penn Valley Elementary School in Falls Township recently teamed up with The Giving Tree and Giant Food Stores to address food insecurity in Bucks County through a service learning project.

As part of the “Eliminating Hunger Campaign,” fourth graders at the school assembled over 280 “Full Belly Bags,” which were delivered to local food pantries last week.
The bags were filled with essential food items including macaroni and cheese, granola bars, applesauce, oatmeal, and cookies. Each also contained a personalized note or card from the students.

The program was supported with materials supplied by The Giving Tree and Giant Food Stores and also saw contributions from students and their families.

In the district newsletter, school officials said a group of brothers from the school raised enough money to contribute 100 of the total bags prepared.
Recent data from nonprofit Feeding America showed that 7.4 percent of the overall Bucks County population and 8.7 percent of children are facing food insecurity.
