Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick called the fall of the U.S.-backed government in Afghanistan an “unmitigated disaster” in a statement.

The Republican from Middletown Township issued the statement shortly after the country’s president fled and reporting indicated the Taliban plan to declare the nation the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.

Below is Fitzpatrick’s statement on the situation:

This is an unmitigated disaster of epic proportions, for both the United States and the World. And this is a direct result of a complete failure of leadership by those in government who donโ€™t have the first clue about national and international security and the importance of peace through strength. The Taliban has now freed thousands of Al-Qaeda fighters from Afghanistan prisons, at a time when our own borders have been significantly weakened by this Administration, all as we approach the twentieth anniversary of 9/11. This is a bad, bad situation. President Biden, this is no time for weakness. We need strength. Put politics aside and work with us to save our country.

As of early Monday, American forces and those from allied nations were rushing to evacuate diplomatic staffs, U.S. citizens and Afghans who have aided their efforts.

The U.S. Department of State said in a Sunday night statement that 6,000 American troops will be in the country by Tuesday to facilitate evacuations and security at the airport.

“The Afghan people deserve to live in safety, security and dignity. We in the international community stand ready to assist them,” said a joint statement issued by the U.S., Canada, the European Union, France, U.K., Poland, and numerous other nations.

In late 2018, Fitzpatrick talked to LevittownNow.com about his trip to the nation and his evaluation.
