Police lowered the flag outside of Bristol Borough Hall Friday to honor the life of an officer killed in the line of duty.

U.S. Capitol police Officer Brian Sicknick died due to injuries sustained after being struck by a fire extinguisher when rioters upset over President Donald Trump’s election loss overwhelmed the capitol complex in Washington D.C. earlier this week, according to media reports.

The attack led to the death of Sicknick, three people who suffered medical emergencies, and a military veteran from California attempting to storm a secure area was shot by a police officer. Dozens of law enforcement officers were hurt.

Below is a statement released by Bristol Borough Chief of Police Steve Henry and the department:

In recognition of the tragic loss of United States Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick, the Bristol Borough Police have lowered the American Flag in front of Borough Hall to half staff. Officer Sicknick’s death is the epitome of the challenge of being a police officer today in a free society. Officer Sicknick went to work that day with the intention of protecting the citizens of United States from harm, regardless of their political beliefs or views. His duty to protect our democracy and stand between civility and chaos cost him his life. Never has there been a more challenging time in our history to be a police officer. Unfortunately some have used the โ€œThin Blue Line” slogan for their own political objectives. The truth is that it is not a slogan. It is a reality. The death of Officer Sicknick just made the line thinner.

As of Thursday, a Bucks Countian from Bensalem had been arrested in connection with the unrest in Washington D.C. The man, who posted on previously social media that it was time for the “blood of tyrants,” was charged with violating curfew and possession of a prohibited weapon, according to The Philadelphia Inquirer.
