Couple Brings New Doughnut Shop To Levittown

Following much anticipation, the Duck Donuts located in the Langhorne Square Shopping Center opened its doors Saturday. 

According to owners Mildred Miller and John Ringwald, a married couple, the decision to open Duck Donuts in the shopping center on East Lincoln Highway in Middletown Township’s Levittown section was because of the people in the area.

“It really is a great area,” they said.

The couple lives about an hour north of Levittown and is familiar with the area because of other business John owns. John said he “couldn’t be happier” when it came to opening the shop in Levittown. 

The couple also attributed the area to the amazing young – mostly in their late teens or early twenties – staff they have at Duck Donuts.

“Our staff is phenomenal,” remarked John.

The couple called the area “family oriented” and said it is a testament to the “terrific parenting,” as John noted, their workers received growing up.

Mildred noted that “all of the employees get trained to do it all but everyone has their speciality.” 

A sweet craving one night after dinner inspired Mildred and John to open up a Duck Donuts franchise. The company originally started in North Carolina and quickly grew to other states.

Mildred said that one night after dinner, John wanted something sweet and Mildred had offered him some doughnuts. The idea took off from there because John was able to see a donut as more than a breakfast food. Therefore, Duck Donuts is “pushing doughnuts as not just breakfast food.” 

Duck Donuts has focused on the individuality of a donut, calling the donut industry “an untapped market.” Mildred said they are looking to “promote doughnuts for special occasions.” 

The business is known for made-to-order doughnuts with all different combinations of flavors and toppings.

Rather than a cake, someone could get a dozen doughnuts and according to Mildred, “everyone will have a unique donut that is theirs.” As Duck Donuts has a “Duck-zillion” amount of combinations one can make their doughnuts. 

Further, Mildred revealed that “they are in the process of developing their own language called Ducklish.” 

John and Mildred did not let the COVID-19 pandemic and the state’s new mandates delay their opening. Rather than doing one opening day, they are hosting an opening week starting Saturday. The first person received a Duck Donuts-themed basket as well as a free dozen donuts every month for one year. Then on Monday they are having a “Milkshake Monday” where everyone receives one dollar off milkshakes. Tuesday’s theme is “Take-it-away” Tuesday featuring one dollar off a dozen donuts. Wednesday’s feature is “One hump or two?” which offers one or two scoops of Philadelphia’s Bassetts Ice Cream. Regarding the ice cream John said it was important that they “keep it local.” Thursday is actually national sprinkle day, or jimmie day, depending on who you ask. Therefore, the special is a free doughnut with a signature glaze and rainbow sprinkles! Mildred explained that “sprinkles is a big theme with Duck Donuts.” The final day of their opening week is Friday or “Get Your Fix Friday” with ninety nine cent regular coffee drinks. 

The business couple said they have prepared for the COVID-19 regulations and have distancing chairs that mark spots in line and presented a clearly clean shop.

Despite the public health measures, Mildred and John said they still intended on keeping the original vibe of Duck Donuts which is “laid back and more relaxed.”

“We are all about the beach.” said Mildred.
