Three Friends Open Second Sin Brewing In Bristol Twp.

Three friends are behind one of the Levittown area’s newest breweries.

Late last month, Second Sin Brewing  Company opened at 1500 Grundy Lane in Bristol Township, the former location of Broken Goblet Brewing, which moved in summer to a larger location on State Road in Bensalem.

The brewery’s three owners – Mike Beresky, Phil Harris, and Jake Howell – all bring different skill sets from accounting to brewing to the operation. Howell brews the beer, Beresky manages the business, and Harris is a jack of all trades who fills any gaps.

Howell said the three men – all from the Levittown area – have known one another since they attended Pennwood Middle School. As they got to college, they started to like beer and Howell tried a home brew from a kit and it didn’t work. He stopped for a bit after that failure and gave it a second try a year later.

As Howell got into home brewing – only from his own recipes – he and his friends started have conversations about opening a brewery.

“Really, this is just something we’ve been focused on most of our adult lives,” he said.

Beresky, Harris, and Howell began working on ideas as Howell got a job at a New Jersey brewery. He eventually left that job and worked as a brewer at Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company in Croydon for five years to learn everything he could.

The trio had planned to call their company Gluttony Brewing Company, but that fell through after a back and forth with a winery in California that used a similar name but not in the beer space.

Howell said the group did some research on the seven deadly sins, which gluttony is one of, and found that Pope Gregory the Great listed gluttony as the number two most offensive to God. From there, the Second Sin Brewing Company name came about.

For their philosophy, the trio is devoted to creating brews that are always rotating to intrigue customers. Howell said the brewery doesn’t want to focus on just have one flagship beer they are known for, but wants customers to like their style of brews.

“Anything we do, we want to do it well,” he said.

Second Sin Brewing Company took over Broken Goblet Brewing’s former space in April and has since made a number of changes. Over the months, they have reworked the layout, removed the carpet, taken down the stage, repainted, added their own decorations, and changed the lighting.

With Broken Goblet Brewing, Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company, and Odd Logic Brewing all about five minutes away, Howell said the area is well-positioned at a hot spot for craft beer.

Howell said the local brewing scene is friendly and the brewers bounce ideas and suggestions off one another.

For a brewery that had become regulars at the local beer festival scene, Second Sin Brewing Company now has a home base for locals.
