A Bucks County deputy sheriff who was charged with exposing and touching himself at a park in Bristol Township has resigned from his job.
Stephen R. Springfield, 39, of Bristol Township, submitted his resignation following his arrest and it was accepted by Sheriff Edward “Duke” Donnelly Monday afternoon, the Doylestown Intelligencer reported.

The sheriff told the newspaper Springfield’s supervisors did not spot any problems in his behavior. It was also noted Springfield had been off since July for vacation and sick leave.
Springfield was released on $25,000 unsecured bail last weekend after he was charged with indecent exposure, open lewdness and disorderly conduct.
According to Bucks County Detectives and Bucks County Rangers, Springfield was spotted by a female visitor to Silver Lake Park viewing pornography and touching his penis. He waved bags of candy at her and asked if she wanted some.

Witnesses corroborated portions of the woman’s story and the fact that Springfield returned to the park in the following days, according to court papers.
Rangers spoke with Springfield last Saturday and he stated he was urinating in a bottle at the park. He later said he was doing “probably exactly what [witnesses] said.” He said he was “excited” but did not ask the woman to do anything.

Springfield is set to have a preliminary hearing before District Judge Joanne Kline. He has retained defense attorney Lou Busico.
