Local fire departments could get a boost this year thanks to a federal grant program.
Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick, a Republican, announced last week that federal emergency safety grants designed to help fire departments with staffing and providing around the clock emergency services to their communities have begun accepting applications.

Fire companies can apply for the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) program from the Department of Homeland Security through Friday, February 10 at 5 p.m.
“Our first responders are always there for us, willing to risk their lives to keep others safe,” Fitzpatrick said. “This grant is an opportunity to bring valuable federal support into our communities, and to ensure our local fire departments have the staffing and resources to protect both lives and property in our communities.”
The SAFER program currently has $345 million set aside to aid fire companies and volunteer interest organizations that work increase or maintain firefighters.
