A local veteran is working to provide outreach and resources to those in need.

Rodney Wyatt, a veteran of the Army and Marines, spends a lot of his time working to help fellow veterans who might not be on their feet or have as strong a footing as they may like.

The founder of nonprofit Salute 2 Service, Wyatt is working to connect resources and aid with people who need it the most. Wyatt’s organization specializes in assisting homeless veterans as well as at-risk veterans.

“I think the state is doing what they can, but it isn’t enough for veterans,” Wyatt said, adding that if he can help someone who isn’t a veteran, he will do what he can.

In addition to hosting events providing food, clothes and similar services, Wyatt tries to put veterans into contact with people who can assist in job training, skill enhancement, and other programs to help people get back on their feet.

“I know the plight they are going through, so I want to try to make it easier for them,” said Wyatt, a resident of Levittown.

Wyatt mentioned that the event and events like it would not have been possible without the help of executive assistant Vanity Wyche, Howard Cupit, Mark Kosler, Sharon Schmidt, Eugene Chisim, Michelle Jackson, Robert Wood, the St. Thomas Aquinas Church and DeShawn Sherill.

Last week, Salute 2 Service held an event in Bristol Township’s Croydon section. It was the nonprofit’s first semi-annual resource event. Wyatt said that veterans were able to take advantage of a number of services, including clothing giveaways, haircuts, crisis intervention, employment leads, entertainment and a free lunch.

“The event went very well,” Wyatt said. He added that the event aided upwards of 20 families with resources, food and clothes.

The tagline for the organization – “A day of hope leading to a lifetime of relief” – was mentioned by Wyatt as being a fair assessment of the event and others like it in the future.

“I’m glad that I could be a part of it and provided a day of hope for these men and women,” Wyatt told LevittownNow.com.

Salute 2 Service is already looking to set up another event, preferably by the end of the year. One of the main pieces of importance, according to Wyatt, is showing the veterans and people in need that the public does care.

“We try to take care of the total individual with all of the resources we have at our disposal,” Wyatt said.
