Middletown’s new finance director is set to start his job at the end of this month.
Township Manager Stephanie Teoli Kuhls announced this week that Middletown has hired Warrington resident Brian Shapiro to the top finance official job. He will start with the township on July 25 and will earn $117,000 per year.

Outgoing Finance Director Dennis Penko is set to retire at the end of this month. Penko and Shapiro will work together next week so the new hire can acclimate to his new position.
Teoli Kuhls said Shapiro will also oversee human resources for the township, which is a newly added responsibility to the finance director position.
Shapiro comes to Middletown after serving as director of fiance and human resources for the last eight years in Lansdale, Montgomery County. Previously, he worked as finance director in Northampton and manager in Dublin and West Rockhill.

“Mr. Shapiro brings strong financial and management skills to this position. I believe he will be an asset to the Middletown Township team,” Board of Supervisors Chairman George Leonhauser said. “His financial experience includes management of the budget process in several other communities. I am looking forward to his ideas on establishing a transparent and engaging budget process.”
“Brian brings a unique set of skills to the township. He has both broad administrative experiences as well as specialized finance skills. I am confident that he will provide strong leadership and oversight to the Finance Department,” Teoli Kuhls stated.

Shapiro holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Penn State and a master’s degree from Villanova University. In addition, he has been awarded the 2012 DCED Governor’s Award of Local Government Excellence in Fiscal Accountability.
“I’m looking forward to beginning a new chapter in my municipal career,” Shapiro said. “Middletown Township is a great community, and I cannot wait to get started working with the team, residents and businesses.”
Shapiro is married and has three children.
