Pennwood Middle School will be getting the most extensive renovation in its 65 year history starting this month.

Last month, the Pennsbury School Board voted to award contracts for the $44 million renovation for the Lower Makefield school that serves students from throughout the district. The largest contract went to Boro Construction of Montgomery County for general construction services.

Work to revamp the middle school will begin this summer and be completed in time for September 2018.

The overhaul of Pennwood will include taking down the school’s unused pool and replacing it with classrooms. The plans also include moving the administration office, revamping cooling and heating suspects and bringing portions of the building up to Americans with Disabilities Act standards.

In addition to the renovations to the Pennwood building, work will be done to improve traffic patterns, sidewalks and outdoor areas as well. Officials said last month that the work is a full renovation of the property.

The project will add environmentally-friendly aspects to the project. The upgraded school will feature LED lighting, high-efficiency heating and cooling systems and low-flow water fixtures. The measures are in an effort to achieve gold LEED standard.

Earlier this week, Democratic State Rep. Steve Santarsiero announced Pennsbury was being awarded a $2 million grant to help obtain a gold LEED standard.

“There are a lot of excellent changes coming to Pennwood, and the grant is really an investment in future savings at the school,” Santarsiero, a Lower Makefield resident, said. “That is good news not only for the students but property taxpayers in the school district.”

In June, school board member Alison Smith said the project came in about $8 million less than originally expected.

The work is being paid for through bonds.
