The Falls Township have approved to take on three community projects at a fraction of the original cost, according to officials.

The township presented six projects for consideration as part of Bucks Countyโ€™s Open Space grant program recently. Of those, the county chose to earmark funds for the installation of a 70-foot-long fishing pier at Falls Township Community Park; the expansion of the townshipโ€™s community garden; and a replacement of the Vermillion Hills pedestrian bridge, to the tune of $312,000, according to Parks and Recreation Directorย Brian Andrews.

Thanks in part to aย grant by the county, Falls will only need to chip in 25 percent, or approximately $78,000.

Supervisors Vice Chairman Jeffry Dence said the T-shaped fishing pier will provide โ€œaccess for everyoneโ€ to the lake. He said the board had budgeted for the project a few years ago as a way to ease entry into the water. The lake is shallow and drops off, he said, making it difficult for some folks to fish.

The board had also allocated funds for the replacement of the single span Vermillion Hills pedestrian bridge in 2016. Once complete, the bridge will be equipped with safety fencing and will look similar to the existing bridge.

The ever-popular community garden has a waiting list of 20 for its 46 total plots, according to Andrews. Plans call for adding 13 more plots with grant funds, he said.

โ€œThereโ€™s always a waiting list,โ€ Supervisors Chairman Bob Harvie said. โ€œItโ€™s been a big hit.โ€

Supervisor Brian Galloway emphasized that the grants will help the township to save money it had already planned to spend.

โ€œThis could be quite a savings,โ€ he said.
