Bucks County’s oldest elected row officer is retiring after 36 years on the job.

“I would have never guessed in my wildest imagination I would end up as county treasurer,” Snyder said earlier this month at the Bucks County Commissioners last meeting of the year.

Snyder served in the Army in Korea between 1951 and 1953. Once he returned to civilian life, he operated a local business, became a member of the International Operating Engineers Union and ran for his first elected office in the 1970s. He was part of the Doylestown Township Supervisors and the Doylestown Planning Commission before winning election to the treasurer’s seat in 1980.

Snyder, a Republican, has led the office from the time it oversaw $60 million to overseeing a county that has a budget of over $400 million.

The treasurer’s staff keeps tabs on county funds, bank statements and disburses all county checks and annuallyย  processes approximately 75,000 state license applications.

โ€œWe all know the turbulence of politics and government,โ€ย Bucks County Commissioners Chairman Robert Loughery stated. โ€œWe all seem to get whipped around. Very few are able to stay the course. Bill has done so with dignity. That is an incredible accomplishment.โ€

“I’ve enjoyed every day of my life working for the county,”ย Snyder said. “I’ve had a great run, and people have treated me so well.”

Starting in 2016, the office will be led by Tom Panzer. The Warminster Republican was elected by a majority of county voters in November.
