A New Jersey company is looking to build a medical waste treatment and transfer facility in Bristol Township.
At the November Bristol Township Planning Commission meeting, Med-Flex Inc. of Hainesport, New Jersey‘s plan to build the facility was approved and forwarded to Bristol Township Council for their review.

The 38,000-square-foot facility would occupy the currently 3.1-acre wooded lot at the corner of Frost and Ford roads. The lot, which is zoned industrial, is the last of the undeveloped spaces in the industrial park on Frost Road.
George Weishoff, the owner of Med-Flex, stated the facility will use steam and pressure to kill germs on the medical waste. The waste would then be shredded and compacted to be sent to a special landfill out of the area,
The facility would also be used to store some medical waste for up to five days before it can be taken to a special incinerator in Baltimore for final disposal.

Weishoff said the only emissions from the facility would be steam, which would be void of any contaminants. He added that spills are rare, but crews on site would be prepared to deal with them and there would be no effort on the surrounding area.
“The process is just water and pressure,” Weishoff assured the planning commission.

The facility would feature a weigh station and truck parking area in the rear of the fenced-in site, according to plans presented to Bristol Township officials.
Med-Flex has been in business for 17 years and retrieves medical waste from doctors’ offices, hospitals and funeral homes. The waste, which has to be destroyed within 72 hours of pick up, is sealed in a bag and then a secure container before being transported to Med-Flex’s facilities.
Weishoff said pick ups of waste would happen between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. before waste processing occurs overnight.

Med-Flex’s operations follow strict guidelines set by various agencies, including the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the company’s owner said.
The company proposed a similar plan in 2010 but the facility was not constructed at the time.
