The Bristol Township School District’s middle school curriculum received an exciting boost these last few weeks, as Franklin D. Roosevelt students received personal computer tablets.

The tablets, which were donated by the nonprofit Digital Promise through a grant from the Verizon Foundation, came equipped with a 2-year, 5-gigabyte data plan to ensure students will have access to the internet and “innovative learning opportunities 24-7.”

While eighth grade students received their tablets earlier in the month, tablets were distributed to seventh grade students last week.

The school’s student tech team, the Tiger Techs, assisted in distributing and registering the devices to students through the district’s mobile device management system. The district noted that the Tiger Techs have been preparing for the October rollout since the summer.

According to the district, FDR is one of two districtย middle schools to receive the free tablets and the only middles schools in Pennsylvania, and two of eight nationwide, selected for the program. Digital Promise, a nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to spur innovation in education, identified the schools because of the District’s technology readiness.

The students will be able to use the tablets during classes and are allowed take them home at the end of the day, Franklin D. Roosevelt Middle School Principal Kevin Boles told LevittownNow.com last year.

Students and staff have been undergoing training on how to operate the tablets and incorporate them into their classroom activities. Ongoing professional development for teachers and instructional technology coaches have been made available to the middle schools.

Parents were offered insurance to cover the tablets if they were damaged or destroyed.
