PennDOT officials said this week that they expect work on the West Maple Avenue Bridge to be finished by December.

The crossing that goes over the Neshaminy Creek to connect Middletown and Lower Southampton is currently being rebuilt by contractors. The demolition work on the bridge began in July 2014.

The new bridge is expected to keep the same arch-style design but take advantage of new construction techniques that require less annual maintenance to the span. PennDOT officials have said previously the new bridge will be adjusted to better handle the 11,000 cars that usually drive across it daily. The bridge is expected to be slightly wider and feature a small shoulder but no sidewalk.

The $7.3 million dollar project also included the opening of a traffic roundabout in Lower Southampton.
