A new ordinance could limit the types of plants that Falls Township residents can plant in their yards.
Falls supervisors authorized the advertisement for a new proposed ordinance Tuesday which could prevent residents from planting “invasive” plants like bamboo in their yards.

According to Chairman Bob Harvie, the proposed ordinance is a response to numerous residents who have complained that their neighbor’s bamboo plants have caused damage in their homes and yards.
The ordinance could allow education provided to new Falls residents about bamboo possibly already on their properties and how to properly maintain it so it doesn’t cause future damage. The ordinance will still allow neighbors to seek legal action if their neighbors do not comply.
The proposed law could limit invasive species of bamboo, the type that Supervisor Brian Galloway said grows 20-30 feet a year, not the noninvasive species that can be kept as house plants.

According to Ecosystem Gardening, phyllostachys bamboo (the invasive kind) is one of the most hated plants in the world. The cost of managing bambooย plants is estimated at billions of dollars of taxpayer money every year.
The supervisors are expected to take possible action on the ordinance at a future meeting.
