The 7th grade academic enrichment students at Maple Point Middle School hosted the 3rd annual Help the Howies Dodge Cancer Tournament to benefit the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation. The dodgeball tournament was held in the Maple Point Middle School gym last month

By all accounts, the event was a big success. A host of parent, teacher, and student volunteers worked to support the 50 registered grade-level teams, and the stands were packed with parents and friends cheering on the old-school craziness. Kevin Hastings, a middle school teacher, reprised his role as host of the event, and Pulse Entertainment graciously provided the soundtrack for the night. Meanwhile, the hallway outside of the gym was lined with other activities, including over 30 raffle baskets, food concession stands, carnival games for the younger children, and a green screen photo both donated by Groove Entertainment.
Members of the winning teams for each grade level received medals, gift cards, bragging rights and, most importantly, the satisfaction of participating in a good cause.
At the end of the night, the students had raised a record-setting $5,938. Preferring an even $6,000, the seventh graders took the initiative over the next few days to collect the extra $62.

Both Dennis and Jennifer Howie, teachers in the Neshaminy School District, have been diagnosed with cancer in the past three years. Jennifer was diagnosed and treated for Thyroid Cancer. Meanwhile, Dennis is still undergoing treatments for a rare cancer called Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Cancer.
The students were touched by this story and decided to carry on the tradition to host the fundraiser to help raise money for the Caring for Carcinoid Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to discovering cures for Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Cancer.
