The day after two Levittown-area firefighters were hurt in the arson at the Magic Cottage school building on Appletree Drive in Bristol Township, Levittown-Fairless Hills Rescue Squad Chief Chris Reif posed a simple question: “How do you describe this job to someone who has not donned this uniform?”

He told the crowd at Sunday’s Annual Bucks County Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service in Doylestown that their desire for their task is something they are born with.

The memorial honored the nearly two dozen firefighters in the county who have given their lives in service of their communities.

The name of Bristol Borough Fire Police Captain David Wintz Sr. was added last year to the memorial, which lies in the courtyard of the Bucks County Courthouse and administration building. On Sunday, the names of Bensalem paramedic and firefighter Daniel McIntosh, who passed away in 2010 while on a call, and Bensalem fire police captain Paul Wurst, who died in 1958, had their names added to the memorial.

The memorial service was attended by more than 200 people and featured fire companies from the entire county.

“I pray that we may never have to add another name to this memorial,” Paul Kreuter, president of the Bucks County Fire Chief and Firefighters Association, said.
