Police: No Motive Yet in Abduction Attempt Fabrication

The 12-year-old boy who admitted to making up the story of an abduction attempt that spread through social media this month has not disclosed his motive, a police official said on Monday.

Lt. Guy Sava said he was not sure if charges would be filed against the boy, whose name is being withheld by LevittownNow.com. The decision on charges is now in the hands of the Bucks County District Attorney’s Office, he added.

A 12-year-old boy was walking home from baseball at around 4:30 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 12) when a man in a gray car approached and tried to abduct him. A good Samaritan punched the would-be abductor and the boy was able to run away.

The boy’s story quickly spread through social media. By the next day, dozens of residents had contacted LevittownNow.com about the posts and many more had shared the information on Facebook.

Sava said police ran into roadblocks when they located the “good Samaritan” and he denied the entire incident. From there, the story began to fall apart.

Television news reports falsely cited information from the Facebook post and lead to more concern about the abduction attempt.

The day after the Bristol Township incident was reported to police, Morrisville had an attempted abduction of a 10-year-old boy. That report is considered credible by police.

Sava told LevittownNow.com that parents should not hesitate to contact the department if they have questions or want to verify stories they are hearing.
