An couple in their 70s have been charged with simple assault and harassment after an argument Wednesday at their Main Street Hulmeville Borough home.

George Unger, 70, and Roberta Unger, 71, are both facing the charges after state troopers out of the Trevose station were not able to place the blame on just one of the two.

Officials responded to reports of a domestic assault just after 9 a.m., police said. The first arriving trooper reported finding Roberta Unger “visibly shaken” and claiming her shoulder and arm were hurt as she fended off her husband during altercations that begun the prior night, court documents said.

Roberta Unger said her husband has been beating her for months. She told authorities she feared for her life and slept with a knife next to her, state police said. The 71-year-old added that the couple’s arguments stemmed from her husband’s alleged alcohol and prescription drug use.

When the troopers spoke with George Unger, he said his wife was attacking him and he had not hit her. A trooper stated in an affidavit that he observed black and blue marks and a bloody, open wound on George Unger’s hand and forearm. The man also had a red and swollen right eye.
